ADHD Studies

Individuals with ADHD (ages 13-55)

We’d like to look at your brain!

Neurosciences and Mental Health Program

 The Hospital for Sick Children

We are trying to understand more about how a person’s brain perceives, anticipates, and responds to a stimulus event (such as a mild electrical pulse to the wrist).  Some people are better at preparing appropriate response in anticipation of an upcoming stimulus event and some people have a really hard time doing so, but we do not really know why. Differences in the ability to prepare for an event may partly explain why the individual with ADHD in often unable to integrate past experience with current, or future, demands.

 The study

Will scan your brain (MEG and MRI) while you do simple tasks
MEG and MRI are not painful, harmful, or invasive
It will take 2 hours of your time

We will give you:

3D coloured pictures of your own brain
$20 to help with travel costs
2.0 hours of volunteer credits (applies to high school students)

If you have been diagnosed with ADHD and are interested in taking part in our research call Min-Na Hockenberry at (416) 813-7470

*Please note that you cannot take part in this study if you wear orthodontic braces, have any metal piercings or implants that cannot be removed. This is because these items are not permitted in the brain scanners.

You can help us learn why Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder runs in families

Why is Sick Kids conducting this study?

Researchers have learned that Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) runs in families. If one person in a family has ADHD then there is a chance that other people in the family will have ADHD too. Researchers at Sick Kids think that ADHD is caused by changes in genes. Genes are the part of us that tell our bodies how to grow and function. Researchers at Sick Kids are looking for the genes that cause ADHD. If we can find the genes that make people develop ADHD we may be able to eventually treat ADHD more effectively.

Who can join this study?

Your family can join this study if, if you have at least 2 children who - are hyperactive - are fidgety or restless - can't pay attention or concentrate - act without thinking and if your children are between the ages of 6 and 16 years.

Why should my family join this study?

Your doctor thinks that 2 or more of your children may have ADHD and that you can help us learn more about ADHD. If your family joins this study we will give your children tests of their learning  thinking and feelings. We will tell you the results of your children's tests on the same day as the tests are given. We will also give you a written report about your children's tests within 6 weeks. You can give a copy of this report to your children's teachers. You can also give a copy of the report to your children's doctor.

What will happen when we join the study?

These are the things that will happen when you and your children join the study, You and your children will be asked to come to Sick Kids for one full day, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. You will meet with the researchers to talk about your children's attention and behaviour. This will happen on the day you come to Sick Kids.

Your children will be given tests so that the researchers can understand your children's thinking, learning, and feelings. This will happen on the day you come to Sick Kids. The researchers will take a small blood sample from you and your children so we can look for genes that cause ADHD. The blood is taken through a needle on the day you come to Sick Kids. The researchers will phone your children's teachers to talk to them about how your child is doing in school.

Will my privacy be protected?

Yes. All information that you give during the study will remain strictly private.

Will the study help cover my travel costs?

Yes. Each family helping us with the study will receive $20 to help cover the cost of getting to Sick Kids

How can I get more information about the study?

You can call or send an E-mail message to the ADHD coordinator to get more information about the study. The phone number is 416-813-8291. Please leave a message with your name and number. You will be called back within 2 days.

Our E-mail address is adhd.genetics@sickkids.ca

Does your child with ADHD have trouble sleeping? Are they also having problems with behaviour during the day?

Dr. Colin Shapiro

_______________________________________________

For this study we are looking for ten (10) medication free children and adolescents, aged 11-15 years, with a diagnosis of ADHD.

To qualify for this study we need children who have trouble getting to sleep, or staying asleep, and who are having some problems during the daytime with aggressive behaviour.

Each child will take part in a two night sleep study at Youthdale Child and Adolescent Sleep Centre (accompanied by a parent) so that we can formally look at their quality of sleep. This is a noninvasive procedure and there are no needles. There will be questionnaires for parents to complete and a small amount of memory and problem solving tests for the children.

Each participant will receive the benefit of a formal sleep consolation with a sleep physician, and will be provided with the results of their polysomnographic sleep study.

Remuneration for travel costs will be provided.

A study looking at how clonidine effects sleep and aggressive behaviour in children with Tourette’s Syndrome and ADHD

Investigators: Dr. Robyn J. Stephens, Dr. Paul Sandor,

and Dr. Colin Shapiro

Sleep disturbances have a wide-ranging impact on a children's health, behaviour, mood, school performance and family relationships, and remain a significant and under treated public health problem. In a recent review childhood insomnia was reported as "pervasive", affecting 10-45% of otherwise healthy preschool and school aged children yet alarmingly, children's sleep has been identified as one of the most poorly researched areas.

Health Canada has approved this study is to gain a better understanding of how poor sleep may be related to aggressive behaviour. To do this, we wish to examine the effects on sleep of a common treatment, clonidine, to learn specifically what aspects of sleep are improved by the medication and to gain a better understanding of how improving sleep may potentially reduce daytime aggression, improve learning and attention span.

This carefully monitored study will involve one group of thirty-two (32) children with Tourette's Syndrome (TS)  and ADHD. Families will be provided with remuneration for each study visit to help cover travel costs.  All participants will also receive a formal consultation with a sleep physician and a report of their sleep architecture.

Do you have videotapes of your child from birth to 12 months of age?

Early Identification of Autism, ADHD, ADD and Other Developmental Problems

We are developing a simple monitoring technique that will allow practitioners to identify infants as young as 2 months old who are at risk for Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and related developmental disorders.

Knowing about typical development is essential to our study because only then will we know what derailed development is.

We are seeking children diagnosed with ASD, ADHD, ADD, Specific Language Impairments, as well as typically developing children in order to complete the study.

This research is being headed by Dr. Stanley I. Greenspan, M.D.(Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, Behavioral Sciences, and Pediatrics, George Washington University), Dr. Stuart G. Shanker, Ph.D. (Distinguished Research Professor of Psychology and Philosophy, York University), and Lisa Bayrami, M.A. (Ph.D. candidate and research coordinator, York University)

Participation in this study will require half an hour of your time. We will provide you with a brief questionnaire regarding demographic and child information. In addition, we would like a videotape of your child when he/she was less than a year old. We will arrange to have your videotape and questionnaire couriered to us. We will then make a copy of your videotape and return the original.

We will share all research findings with you and continue to keep you informed about the progress of the study. To thank you for your participation we would like to offer you items beneficial to your child’s development. For more information, please contact Lisa Bayrami at York University at (416) 736-2100, ext. 33258 or email allisona@yorku.ca.
